NYU Shanghai is the first Sino-US joint venture university approved by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China with independent legal person status. Together with NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York City, NYU Shanghai consists three degree-granting campus in NYU’s global network.

In 2017, NYU Shanghai celebrated the graduation of the Inaugural Class. On May 27-28, Shanghai’s landmark–the Oriental Pearl TV Tower was lit up in violet in honor of NYU Shanghai’s first graduating class, following the tradition of lighting the Empire State Building violet each year for NYU’s graduation.
